EARLY YEARS
DEPRESSION YEARS
General Roberts grew up in Pennsylvania. He was only 11 years when the stock market crashed in 1929 and the world-wide Great Depression began. Gen. Roberts has spoken to many school groups describing his experiences during that time.
Interview with Virginia School Children
In his early teens, J. Milnor Roberts shoveled coal for 50 cents per ton. Later he worked as a licensed salesman of womens custom-fit hosiery, walking door-to-door to earn money for his college education.
LEHIGH UNIVERSITY ALUMNI
General Roberts went to college at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. He studied metallurgy, was in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program and graduated in 1940.
